How disappointing!

We walked up to the Gallery this morning to redeem a gift card at KB toys before they went out of business. It was a very out of character thing to do which made it kind of fun. We were saddened to read that as of January 1st they were no longer accepting gift cards. wah wahhh! Ivy had already picked out her toy so we felt we should still get it for her. I am pretty sure the small mice who live in the Petshop will be lost under the couch in 24 hours and after she is stricken by sadness at their disappearance, she will forget all about it. Good thing it was only 6 bucks. We got to take the bus home, which is always fun for Ivy but both Scott and I thought we were going to barf because it was so hot and we were riding sideways... or something. Home safe and sound, bellies full of grilled cheese and tomato soup, I am off to nap.

The First Family

I feel like I can't describe the inauguration more poetically or better than we all have been hearing from millions of Americans and people around the world. I feel like there is nothing that hasn't been said about his presence, our excitement, their relationship, her beauty, his kindhearted and open nature. I love them and I can't wait to watch them grow in the White house. There is a small part of me that is worried that all the responsibility and change will wreck them, I think about the girls and how they will miss their dad, but I think he has done such a good job of explaining to them what he is doing and why that they will understand. I am picturing how often he will be able to come home for dinner and picturing it to be pretty rare, but then what makes them different from millions of other families? I mourn their loss of family dinner too. And deep down inside, I feel like he knows what is really important in parenting and he will find a way to make it happen.

We had a very enlightening book club on Monday night. Having nothing to do with the book, we began to talk about reproductive rights. THERE is a topic that has no right answers! And yet, there we were, like the women on the VIEW, telling our stories, sharing our fears and asking our questions. We have come a long way as far as Women and their bodies are concerned, but God Dammit we have a long-ass way to go! It has been admittedly about 5 years since I have used contraception but did you know that a pharmacist can refuse to fill your contraceptive prescription based on his or her own religious or moral belief? AND they can tell it to you loudly and angrily and it is considered fine and dandy? "I am sorry Lady, I think you are pretty much going straight to hell for not wanting 75 children and as soon as I am done belittling you and exposing you to the other customers, I will put this refill request in with one of our Heathen workers and he'll probably be happy to fill it for you just as soon as he can. Have a blessed day!" Seriously? Yes, seriously!
